Vietnamese Ca Phe and Bia

Hoa our tour guide said that the French introduced ca phe and bia to Vietnam in the 1800’s and that typically Vietnam was a country of tea and rice wine drinkers. The coffee and beer appear to have taken over.

New Ca Phe styles tried and tested for you are:

Vietnamese coffee – generally cold with condensed milk – standard everywhere but esp. HCMC

Egg coffee – ice cold, with egg yolks whipped on top – very sweet – Hanoi

Salted coffee – ice cold, with a salted cream top – voted the best by MT and KO! – Hue

Coconut coffee – ice cold with coconut ice cream (yum – see below) – Hoi An

With the exception of the Salted Coffee, i look forward to an Sydney Flat White.

A mixed bunch with the bia as we worked our way down from Hanoi to HCMC:

BIA HAN OI – Hanoi’s own, this had a good flavour and no bad after taste

The Huda – weak piss from Hue

Larue – A Frenchman’s brew from Hue – the only notable thing about this one was the old school canning technique

Hoi An’s C-Brewmaster’s Papa Bear IPA – Two 600ml jars at 7% was a little more than I was expecting for a sun downer. These were for Tickle.

333 – everywhere, not bad, not great

Saigon Lager – Similar to the 333’s, but will be remembered for its fortifying properties during the home stay.

Pasteur St’s Jasmine IPA – a lovely finish to the tour

Time for a detox 😉
